Momma Do at Naptime...

I have been MIA on this blog for a bit. We had our spring break a week ago, traveling 14 hours (one way) in the car up to Idaho for a family get together. We went to Yellowstone National park, as well as just general lazy family fun. :) Needless to say, there wasn't much time or effort put into any cute hairstyles. Even since being home, the girls have been sporting simple ponytails or braids.

I just thought I would post this- it's very similar to the Momma Do video I posted last, but the back is just two flopped piggies (just not pulled out all of the way) instead of pinned. I've found that I have worn this style many times the last few weeks- it's fast (about 10min) and easy, and you can do it on wet, dry, or crazy bedhead hair. (The last is my preferred style lately.) AND, it works great for any length of hair.

Plus, it stays in really well throughout the day- even when running like crazy, or I'm sweating my pants off to the Ripped in 30 video by Jillian Michaels. (Only 4 days in, but a great workout...I love her 30 day shred too if any of you moms are looking for super quick workouts.)

So that's it. Sorry for slacking on the styles! And these pictures were taken while I'm sitting in the little girls' room trying to get them to sleep. Both girls have taken to me either holding their hands while they fall asleep, or at least being near them in the room. Good thing there's laptops. :)

A Momma Do VIDEO!

So, like most people, I dislike being on camera, but I've had a few comments and emails asking about how to do the twists that are in some of the common hairstyles that I do. So, here's a simple updo that uses the twists braids as an updo. Super simple and pretty quick.

All you'll need:
 - 2 rubberbands (or any hairtie to make two pigtails-  I use 4 rubberbands just hold my thicker hair better)
-hairspray
-bobbypins (I used about 10)
-flat iron or curling iron to curl your hair.

The video is about 5 minutes, but I did cut out the curling of my hair, only because mine takes forever to curl it all. You can also do this without curling and without pinning the pigtails up, and it makes for a super cute casual weekday do. Also, if leaving it down, I'll try to put my pigtails pretty close to the back center of my head...I'm not a fan of little 5-year old pigtails on adults. :)

A quick fix...

This one is a little embarrassing to post, but I thought it might be useful to someone out there in blogland who may be like me- rushing out of the house to get a kid to school only to realize that you totally forgot to fix your own hair. It happens often to me, and luckily I'm almost always going back home, but today I had a few errands so I had to do something with my bedhead.

So here's where it started- yesterday I just had a simple front bump/bun do. Nothing fancy at all, but after sleeping on it, it looks that much better. :)

Start with a twist braid in the front (similar to a french braid, but you're twisting together 2 sections instead of braiding 3- you still add hair to each piece as you go.)

One on the other side (Hi, Ruby!)

So here's what I had in my hair to work with- one hair tie and two bobbypins.

I hold the two sections in my mouth while I pull the rest of the hair in a ponytail- then add the two twists.

I usually would add a tie here and then twist with another tie, but I only had one, so I just started twising everything together, making sure to keep the twists nice and tight.

Then twist it up in a little bun, and here ya go. Super easy and fast (10 minutes in the 7-11 parking lot while returning Redbox movies.) :)

Update...and some twisty buns...

So many of you gave me your opinion about the paint color for my dining room.  In true Rachel form, I obsessed about the color for a long time, then went to the store to buy the 3 gallons I needed, and bought a completely new (untested) color! I went with one by Martha Stewart called Slipstream. It was still in the gray family, but had a lot more blue in it than any of the other choices that I had picked up. Here's the before and after of the painting. Thanks so much to all of you who gave me your opinion on the color- I was heading over to get the Porpoise, which I think was the majority winner. :)

Now back to the hair. This is one that I did for Emma really fast last week. Just simple braided twists (similar to a french braid, but you're just twisting the two sections instead of braiding three.) back into low twisted buns. I've heard these called worm twists- where you take smaller sections and twist them up until they twist up on themselves...Whatever they're called, they're cute, and perfect for wet hair days. :)

(There's actually twist braids on both sides of her head, I just didn't get a picture of the other side.)

Momma Do- Side Braid...

Side braids seem to be all the rage right now, but I never can pull them off without the back hair totally falling out of the braid. Here is my solution to that problem-

I started out with two twists, then pulled them together to the side into a braid. I did it when it was wet, so hopefully that will help it stay in a little bit...Although I'm sure it will get nice and loose throughout the day.

I had a great video showing how to do the twists and all, but Michael came in half way through in his birthday suit so I can't use it. Funny thing is, it IS his birthday!!! Happy 6th to my little monkey! :)

Have a great weekend!

Two twists and a bun...

This was a super simple one on Emma for church yesterday. I just sectioned off the front portion of the hair, pulling back the rest into a ponytail. Then I split it again, doing twists on each section. (Similar to a french braid, just twisting two sections instead of braiding three.) Pull those back into the ponytail and add a little messy bun! This one takes me about 15 minutes because of Emma's little wiggly head, and my bit of OCD about nice looking twistys. :)

Field Day!

Today is Field Day at Emma's school. It includes all sorts of water fun, which means all sorts of crazy hair at the end of the day. I usually try to pull it back so it is out of her eyes, and I try to do something that will stay looking cute after it gets wet.
