Reader Photos! Spider Headbands...

I got a couple reader photos that I wanted to share. Juliet made a couple headbands that turned out oh so cute! Thanks for sending in the photos, Juliet!!

Also, here is Abby wearing the headband that I made- Her mom did a super cute little messy bun. Yay for Halloween! :)

A Candy Corn 'Do...

Last year I actually dreamt about this hairdo, but unfortunately, I never had a chance to do it before Halloween. Then this year I saw this cute one from the Princess, and it reminded me that I should actually get it done before Sunday. :)

Anyway, the idea was fun, but my execution wasn't very great- we all woke up late this morning, so I was busy fixing the hair while Emma was eating breakfast and finishing homework. Not the best place to work on hair when you should have nice straight parts and even spacing for a candy corn. Anyway, here's the do!

Check this one out too! I promise there was no copying at all, but it is the same thing! Too funny!

Spooky Spider Headband...

I shared this link with you yesterday, and here's our version! I made it a little smaller since it was going on a small head, but it worked out really well! (And wouldn't you know- my camera died right as I was taking the last photos- and I can't find my battery charger!)

Here are the supplies I bought-

After gluing the "legs" on, I actually had to change this wire- it was too thick for all of the beads...

We added a little jeweled head to ours...

My New Laundry Room...

So this post is another one that is a little more personal. Today I am officially a student again! I'm starting a masters in education program, so it might be a little hectic around here for the next year or so. Someday I'll need to go back to teaching, and this is a good way to get my mind working again. :)

Anyway, I thought I'd post this one other redo. It was my last major project to finish before starting my first class. The place that I probably spend close to the most time during housework- the laundry room!

Just the basic before and afters, but I'll be posting the full "how to" on my other blog tomorrow. I'm tired. We carved pumpkins tonight- so fun, but busy. :)

Ruby checking out the "kids" carving abilities.

In other super important news, Emma decided not to be Medusa. She said that she was worried she'd scare little kids. :) So sweet. Anyway, for the last few years I've tried to convince her to be Pippi Longstocking, but until she watched the movie, she couldn't be convinced. She finally decided that this was the year to be Pippi!

Lots of adults at the school carnival knew who she was, but most of the kids didn't- but they did like her hair! :) (braid one pipe cleaner in with each section of hair, and then bend them- this could work with a lot of different ideas, animal ears, etc.)

The Three Musketeers! :)

A change of plans...

So apparently after a little surfing this morning, I now have to go to Michaels- I'm almost running out of time to make THIS:

SO CUTE!! Here's the tutorial!

Pebbles Flintstone...

When I told Emma about this reader request, both she and Michael didn't know who I was talking about. Finally, after describing the joys of the Flintstones, they both had a realization, and Michael said, "OH! The baby on the Fruity Pebbles commercial!" Sad that they haven't actually seen the show.

Anyway, Stacy and her 9-year old daughter wrote and asked if I would show them how I would do Pebble's hair. So here's my inspiration:

So cute, little Pebbles.

Anyway, I started off by making the bone for her hair. (I didn't just have one laying around.) I am working on some snake heads for Emma's costume, and used the same lightweight Model Magic. It was about $5 for a bigger package at Michael's. (would have been less if I had remembered one of the 3 coupons I had at home!)

Here's the bone. It is super light, so it shouldn't have a problem staying in her hair all night...

So, start with a super high ponytail- the higher the better.

Next, put the bone at the base of the ponytail, then take a small section of hair out of the pony. (You'll use this to wrap around the bone. I split that section in two, crossed them over the bone, and brought them back around the ponytail, where I crossed them again. Now depending on the length of hair you're working with, you'll want to repeat this. On Emma's I did it twice; just make sure you end up at the back of the ponytail.

So take whatever is left of that hair that you've been wrapping around the bone, and tie it tightly with a rubberband to hold it in place. Remember Pebbles has crazy poofy hair, so this little  bit out of the ponytail won't even matter.

Now just frizz up the rest of the hair with a good dose of hairspray (I didn't do this because it's still a school day,) and you're all set with a super cute little Pebbles Flintstone do!

Anyone else need a Halloween Idea??

Short-Hair Cinderella

Here's my interpretation of Cinderella's hair when you don't have much to work with. I'll do one on Emma's head in a bit- I know we are all in crunch time for Halloween. :)

Section and rubber-band the hair as shown (If I were going to do it again, I would have made all three of those back ponytails right in a row instead of having the middle one further back. Also, near the end of the do, I ended up repositioning the two middle ones closer to the part.)

Next, pull up the back of the hair into rubber-bands- take this section and the front section and combine it with the middle ponytail.

Finally, curl the bits of hair, tease a bit and then hairspray into place. I did have a cute little blue ribbon/headband that would cover that first rubber-band and add to the Cindrella look, but Maia wouldn't keep it in because she believes that it is Ruby's. (Hopefully she's that nice about possessions when they are teenage girls.) :) This is also a great do for just everyday/fancy stuff.

Snow White...Sorry, no Dwarfs

So I know a lot of little girls dress up as Snow White, and some will have long hair, so I thought I'd show how to make long hair look short and curly. (This is one of Emma's favorite hairstyles because she would like to cut her hair SOOO badly. I don't do it often because she gets so much attention for "cutting" her hair.)

So, first, here's a picture of Emma's hair. You can see that it's pretty long, mid-back, and straight.

To start off with the do, just pull up most of the hair except for a 2-3" section at the base of the neck. Curl this nice and tight with either a curling iron or the flat iron. (I used my flat iron) Then, take each of the curls, wrap them up onto each other and pin them to her head. (these are essentially old-school pin curls.)

Now, let down the next layer, curl tight, and pin. This time though, let about 1/3 of the hair fall from the bottom of the curl before you pin it.

For the top layer, do the same thing, but now let more of the curl fall out of the wrap before pinning. Also, make sure on this section to hide the pins a little more than the bottom layers.

The final step is adding the signature red bow. Now you have a Rapunzel turned Snow White. :)

(As always, please leave me a comment if you have any suggestions! I get all excited when I get comments.) :)

Belle!

Okay, before reading any further, you must agree to excuse all crappy photographs and messy-bathroom-backgrounds. :)

Now that that's finished, I had a chance to steal my niece Abby this afternoon. I had my motives, and luckily Abby agreed to let me fix her hair like Belle. I actually did step-by-step photos on this one, just because I figure it is a really common costume, so it will hopefully be useful to someone. I'm sure you could adapt this for someone with short hair, but Abby's was perfect- brown and long, just like Belle. So here's the do!

First, start off with a half-part from ear to ear, then put the back section into two ponytails. I put the bottom one off center, because it seems like Belle always has that part over her shoulder. Next, take the very front and part it right in the middle. (Abby has bangs, so this will work for most haircuts.)

Now, with the front section, start with a small bit of hair right in the front, and twist adding small sections each twist. Once you have all the hair included, twist it right back to the upper pony and tie it off with a rubber band.

Curl both ponytails. (I use a straight iron for most curls- check this video if you don't know how to do it)

Now, put your fingers where you want the base of the "poof" to be. Flip the ponytail over, and pin where your fingers were.

Now, flip the pony back over, and pin the base below the ponytail- make sure to shape a little so it has the right curve.

Now, you just need to place the curls to cover the bobbypins, and extend some of the hair from the top ponytail to cover the top of the bottom- just to make it look like it's all one section of hair.

Last, take a piece of ribbon (this is a thick grosgrain- if I were doing it again, I'd probably find a satin, but this is what I had on hand) Using a safety pin, push the ribbon through the hair and place around the front base of the poof.

Now instead of tying it off in any kind of a bow (I don't think Belle had a bow) I just cut off the ends, and secured it with a bobbypin- making sure to hide the ends with a curl

So there ya have it. Comment if you have any questions. Thanks Abby!
