A Momma Do VIDEO!

So, like most people, I dislike being on camera, but I've had a few comments and emails asking about how to do the twists that are in some of the common hairstyles that I do. So, here's a simple updo that uses the twists braids as an updo. Super simple and pretty quick.

All you'll need:
 - 2 rubberbands (or any hairtie to make two pigtails-  I use 4 rubberbands just hold my thicker hair better)
-hairspray
-bobbypins (I used about 10)
-flat iron or curling iron to curl your hair.

The video is about 5 minutes, but I did cut out the curling of my hair, only because mine takes forever to curl it all. You can also do this without curling and without pinning the pigtails up, and it makes for a super cute casual weekday do. Also, if leaving it down, I'll try to put my pigtails pretty close to the back center of my head...I'm not a fan of little 5-year old pigtails on adults. :)

Deja Vu?

I was attempting a different hairstyle (I'll retry it later so I don't want to give it away,) but failed at the one I was trying to duplicate, but came up with this one instead.  I'm a little worried that I may have seen one like this before, but I have gone through a couple blogs, and can't find anything, so hopefully I'm not stealing anyones idea! (If you know of one like this, will you leave a comment with the link?)

The video shows the steps, but I did go back at the end and cut out the first rubberband so the hair was a little more loose, and the hair was actually holding the ponytail.

Felt Rose Tutorial...

I've seen a lot of felt flowers around, all of which are very cute. I've tweaked and combined a few that I had tried to make that was one a little more of what I wanted, which is a simple, somewhat realistic rose. So, here's what I came up with.

Here you can see the cuts. They are pretty basic, but I have included a template here just to make it easier. Along with the felt, I've got a hair clip that I'm going to attach it to, and I used some matching embroidery thread.

So after you have everything cut out, sew the two petal sections together to make a small x. I'm sure you could also glue this project if you're not much of a sewer. It might not look as clean, but it would work.

Now, start rolling up the strip of felt. Once you reach about 1/2 way, start twisting the felt as you roll it. This video will help explain this part. (Also, make sure to sing the Happy Working Song while you're working- it helps get things done faster.) :)

Third, attach the "petals" by sewing them first from the bottom, and then tack each petal in place with a small stitch. I did the smaller petals completely, and then moved on to adding the larger petals so I could shape the rose a little better. This video shows how I did this next step. (Muse is a great band to listen to while crafting, BTW.)

Once both those steps are done, you should have your cute little rose! Attach it to any project- bags, headbands, whatever! I'm going to finish this project by attaching it to a simple hair clip- fitting for my blog of course. I chose to cover my clip using some "flocking." If you hold a small bunch of embroidery thread and just make little tiny snips, you'll end up with a little pile of this great soft fluff.

Now just sew or hot glue your rose to the clip and you're finished! Pretty cute, and super fast. Imagine the cute little group of roses you could make- yellow, pink, white, so cute! Hope this was a fun tutorial, and please leave me a link if you try it out! :)

What's more fun than making your own felt rose clip?? Having one sent to you of course! Just leave a comment and I will pick a winner on Wednesday morning at 10am. (PST) Your choice of color! Yipee!!

Flower Hair Pins...

So there are some super cute hair pins out there, but I thought I'd show you how I make mine. A couple of tips-

1. For flowers on bobby pins, go with smaller and/or flowers with only a couple layers. They have some great spring time blossoms at the craft stores, so just go look around. Also, grab something for the center- cute jewels, or scrapbooking brads work well (remove the little prongs)

2. When you glue, make sure that the flat side of the bobby pin is on the bottom (where your head will be.) It's not comfortable to have the pointed side stabbing your head. (I've done it, unfortunately.) :)

3. Pins work the best on updos or braids- I don't use them on down dos or they fall out too easily (maybe that's just my girls.)

4. This is what you'll need- glue gun, jewel, bobby pin, and flower

OKAY, now on to the video!! :)

*Does this cut off part of the video for you? Not sure what's going on...

Wave Curl Tutorial

I've been meaning to post this for a while now. Hopefully it's useful to some of you. :)

This is the end result- nice loose waves instead of tight curls. They look great as they relax throughout the day.

Topsy Tail Tutorial

The key to getting a good pull through is to start with a smooth ponytail, and make sure that your initial rubberband is not too tight- this will make the hair not pull through as well. (Watch after I do the actual pulling through, I tighten the rubberband.) Let me know if you have any other video ideas!

*I like music with videos, and in my house silence does not come frequently. So, if you need words to explain what I'm doing, please let me know and I'll change it for the next movie.

I've already got a couple of emails asking where I bought my topsytail. I bought mine for just a couple dollars on ebay, and it came with 2 or 3 different sizes. (The big one is all I can find now though!) :) I know I've seen them at Claire's here in Las Vegas as well.

Flat Iron Curl...

So I know the momma over at Adopt a Do just posted a similar video, but I've been waiting for the right time to do this video, and this morning was it. (Emma is sick, so pardon her not so happy expression.)

Anyway, here's a really simple video on how to curl with a flat iron. Any questions, just let me know! :)
